Beyond Heroes: Recognizing Our Own Worth This Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month is a time to not only celebrate the achievements of influential women but also to recognize the complexities and struggles that come with being human. It’s important to remember that even the most celebrated figures in history had their own flaws, doubts, and moments of imperfection.

It is important to remember that although our heroes have made an impact on their communities they were human beings with weaknesses. It is highly likely that they made more than a few mistakes. There might have been times when they gave up, or made a poor decision and thought poorly of others. They could have disappointed someone, arrived late to a meeting or ruined something valuable. Powerful women cry, yell, fear, worry, and feel guilty. They may have chosen the wrong partners for their intimate relationships or even hurt others. They may have had to ask for forgiveness and sometimes may not have received it. They may have difficulty forgiving others. There were times that they did not know the right thing to wear, showed up late or said something embarrassing. Some were fired from jobs or had conflicts with family members. Are any of these human flaws familiar to you?

Instead of comparing ourselves to these iconic figures and feeling inadequate, we should focus on our own strengths, contributions, and areas of impact. Each of us has the potential to make a difference in our own unique way, even if we have flaws and make mistakes along the journey. It’s easy to put historical figures on pedestals and forget that they too were human, with their own set of struggles and imperfections. This Women’s History Month and all year, let’s celebrate the diversity of women’s experiences and accomplishments, acknowledging that our worth isn’t defined by perfection but by our resilience, determination, and the positive impact we make in our own communities and beyond.

Recognizing and celebrating our own achievements, no matter how small they may seem in comparison, is crucial for maintaining self-worth and confidence. After all, it’s often through our flaws and mistakes that we learn and grow the most. So here’s to acknowledging our accomplishments and embracing our humanity this Women’s History Month and beyond!
